Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne

MLA students and parents recently adventured to Water Wheel Falls in the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne in Yosemite NP.  High water, perfect weather, and no mosquitoes!  Hiking 19 miles to experience the beauty of the Sierra Nevada is such a great reason to leave the classroom behind for a day!

Tis the season…

Happy New Year!  We hope everyone had a relaxing winter break, and that you are eager to get back to learning.

This is the season where our students really begin to prepare for big tests in earnest.  The SAT Reasoning Test, SAT II Subject tests, AP exams, and the ACT.

Here are the dates for the SAT tests (both Reasoning and Subject):
March 5
May 7
June 4
Last day to register for these is about 1 month prior to the test date.  Please use this link to learn more:
AP test dates are the first two weeks of May.  Please use this link to find exact dates:
Those of you in biology, chemistry, physics, or pre-calculus are required to take the SAT Subject test for these classes (eg – if you are in chem and pre-calc, you will take both of those tests).  The June test date is the best date for these tests.
If you are a 10th grader, we strongly suggest you take the SAT Reasoning test on May 7.  11 graders should plan on taking the SAT in March, as the May date conflicts with the AP Calculus test.
Remember that this is going to be the new SAT Reasoning Test – high score will be 1600!

Fall Orientation Trip

MLA students visited Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite National Park this September in order to hike, climb and canyoneer.  They summited Mount Conness from the East, and then hiked through to Tuolumne Meadows campground (~17 miles), climbed crack and face on Dozier Dome, and then geared up for a descent of Tenaya Canyon on the final day.  This trip is a traditional way for MLA students and parents to begin the school year and get to learn more about each other in different ways than are possible in the classroom.

High Sierra Odyssey 2015

MLA students explored the High Sierra on a challenging 8-day adventure off trail through the John Muir Wilderness and Kings Canyon National Park.  They started by climbing over Lamarck Col (12880′), passed over several more cross-country passes, and through remote basins, and finally exiting over Cox Col (13040′) into the Rock Creek drainage.

Teacher wanted!

MLA is looking for a part-time writing instructor to begin this fall. Candidates should have high school classroom experience teaching topics in grammar, writing, and literary analysis. If interested, please send resume and cover letter to info@mammothlakesacademy.org.
